It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.

Name: Anthony Xavier Lopez

Gender Pronouns: he/him/his

What do you currently do for work and/or school?: Professor of Biology Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC)

Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: Queer chicano scientist/educator

What are you passionate about?: As a biologist, I'm passionate about improving scientific literacy among individuals. Becoming scientific literate helps with making informed decisions about the many science-related problems we are bound to encounter in our daily lives. As an educator, I enjoy sharing my personal experiences as a biologist in the classroom in order to engage students in science. Lastly, I have a strong passion for increasing the achievements of underrepresented students entering STEM.

Why is the representation of scholars of color important to you?: The representation of scholars of color is critical, especially for those individuals who feel like they don't belong in academia. Currently, underrepresented minorities (URMs) make up a bulk of the California community college student population, yet URMs are particularly underrepresented in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) related fields. In most cases, low faculty diversity in STEM, leaves URM students with few significant opportunities to connect with mentors with shared experiences.

If people are interested in getting connected to you, how can they?: alopez722@mtsac.edu; instagram (el_tony)

Anything else you would like us to know?: During office hours, we listen to hip hop, 90s R&B and cumbias.

Thank you Anthony for sharing space with us!
