What is Scholars of Color?

It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.

Let us now welcome Alba Arana to the Scholars of Color Space!

Name: Alba Abigail Arana

Email: aaarana1@asu.edu

Gender Pronouns: She/Her

What do you currently do for work and/or school?: I am currently a graduate student at Arizona State University in the MEd Higher and Postsecondary Education. I work at ASU as the Service Advisor for Changemaker Central advancing our community service portfolio by connecting students with more long term community service opportunities. I also started my own house cleaning/home organizing business that I run part-time when I'm not working or in class.

Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: I would describe myself as a strong, independent first generation Latina women. Daughter of immigrants from Guatemala and Honduras. In this world to help others shine their light as bright as they can. My family is my biggest treasure, I'm a domestic violence survivor and I take that strength into everything that I do in my life. Proud RPCV Dominican Republic.

What are you passionate about?: I am passionate about supporting first generation students navigate the higher education system and becoming successful professionals. I am passionate about service and giving back to my community.

Why is the representation of scholars of color important to you?: The representation of scholars of color is important to me because it's time for us to occupy spaces that we have never had the chance to be at. I want there to be a support system for future generations that tell them "If I can do it so can you and this is how".

If people are interested in getting connected to you, how can they?: email is the best way: aaarana1@asu.edu

Thank you Alba for sharing space with us!
